Bed Linens by Canadian: An Experience Beyond the Norm of Luxury

Imagine coming home after a long day of work with the hassle of Metro Manila traffic. Upon contact, you slowly give in to your bed’s playful call to slumber. Your eyes grow heavy as you drag your tired body, anticipating the warm caress of your duvet cover wrapping you up in

its cocoon of comfort. Slowly, the thoughts of the exhausting work day drift off while you climb the peak of relaxation. Hours pass as if they were seconds and you wake up the next day feeling very refreshed, ready to start the day but not really keen on leaving the comfort of your bed. You sit up, smile and think of how the time you spent shopping for beddings was all worth it.

Choosing the perfect bed sheet is usually the most challenging part of putting together a comfortable bed to sleep in. It’s important to take into consideration how the sheets come in direct contact with our skin, which makes looking for the right type of fabric just as important as the quality of the mattress as well as the warmth and coziness of a blanket. The right combination makes for the most comfortable slumber.

Herbalife Releases Nutrition at Work Survey

Herbalife’s Nutrition At Work Survey Reveals Majority of Philippines’ Workforce Lead Largely Sedentary Lifestyles, Putting them at Risk of Obesity

Fifth Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour seeks to address health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, and deepen practical understanding on the benefits of a healthy, active life.

Herbalife, a global nutrition company, has released the findings of the new Nutrition At Work Surveywhich revealed that the majority of Philippines’ workforce leads largely sedentary lifestyles, putting them at risk of obesity. The Survey1, which was designed to understand the lifestyle habits and attitudes of Asia Pacific’s modern workforce, was conducted in March with 5,500 full-time workers in 11 Asia-Pacific markets, including 500 workers from the Philippines.

According to the survey findings, almost nine out of 10 (85%) workers in the Philippines spend at least six hours a day sitting at their desk, with 52% of its workforce eating lunch at their work desk two to five times per week. The survey also revealed that majority of Philippines’ workforce (86%) exercise less than three times per week, with five out of 10 getting less than 30 minutes of physical activity a day at their workplace. This suggests a significantly worrying trend locally, on the back of rising obesity ratesrecorded in recent years.

Nevertheless, the risk of obesity could be averted ifworkers in the Philippines decide to take control over their own nutritional intake and exercise regimen. Close to eight out of 10 workers (75%) affirmed that they strive to live a healthy, active life, however, the majority of them noted that they find it difficult to stay active during workdays.

With a majority of Philippines’ workforce leading largely sedentary lifestylesour mission as a global nutrition company is to help people in the Philippines take practical steps towards leading healthy, active lives. By inculcating positive nutrition and active lifestyle habits to people in the Philippineswe hope that this will, over time, help reduceobesity risks and lead to positive improvements to the well-being of our people,” said Mr. Rosalio Valenzuela, General Manager of Herbalife Philippines.

Aimed at addressing health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, and deepening practical understanding on the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles, Herbalife launched its fifth Asia Pacific Wellness Tour 2016, held in the months of April and May. The latest edition of the Wellness Tour builds upon the successes of the past four tours that welcomed more than 80,000 participants across the region, and features a host of medical symposiums, talks and workshops led by seven experts from Herbalife’s Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB), covering 26 cities across Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Gary Small, M.D. has recently visited the country and shared his expert views on digital dementia and brain aging at the A Smart Way to Healthy Aging: A Talk by Gary Small, M.D.” event. Dr. Small, a specialist in brain health and aging, has authored over 500 scientific works and received numerous awards and honors, including the "Senior Investigator Award" from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.

During the talk Dr. Small addressed health and nutrition related issues associated with sedentary lifestyles and share practical tips on how today’s workforce can live healthier lives by making simple changes to their daily lifestyles. Health and medical professionals, academics, as well as the general public have also engaged in lively dialogues with Dr. Small at the event, and had the chance to network with like-minded professionals through the Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour platform.

Rounding up the team of Herbalife NAB experts who have participated in the Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour are:

• Dr. David Heber, chairman of the Herbalife Nutrition Institute and Nutrition Advisory Board. A leading expert in the field of nutrition, named as one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” by Thomson Reuters in 2014 and repeatedly included in “The Best Doctors in America”.
• Dr. Chin-Kun Wang, an expert in metabolism and nutrition, with a focus on the clinical evaluation of nutritional supplements, nutraceuticals, functional foods and herbs. He was awarded the National Award of Biomedicine in Taiwan in 2008 for his contribution to medical education.
• Dr. Julian Alvarez Garcia, a specialist in sports medicine and sports physiology who has advised professional teams, national teams and individual athletes on a range of disciplines including weightlifting, triathlons, mountain biking, football and basketball.
• Dr. Darren Burgess, an expert in sports science and nutrition who has authored papers in multiple peer review journals. He is also the current Head of High Performance at Port Adelaide Football (AFL) Club, and the former Head of Fitness and Conditioning at Liverpool Football Club.
• Dr. Nataniel Viuniski, an expert in pediatrics and nutrition who has authored “Childhood Obesity – A Practical Guide”. He is also currently an advisor to Brazil's Health and Education Ministry for Childhood Obesity.
• Dr. Francis Gregory Samonte, one of the Philippines’ premier experts in pediatric neurology, and the first Filipino appointed to the NAB. He was a recipient of the Chairman’s Achievement Award from the University of Louisville, Kentucky’s Department of Pediatrics.

The NAB experts were also joined by Dr. Luigi Gratton, Herbalife’s vice president of nutrition education and development, who has written numerous articles on nutrition and obesity, and has appeared on television speaking on nutrition, anti-aging medicine, sports nutrition and other medical topics.

“With each new edition of the Wellness Tour, we are seeing an increasing number of people gain practical knowledge to lead better lives. We hope that that this year’s Tour will further empower people to take charge of their nutritional intake and exercise regimen, so that they can enjoy the full benefits of a healthy, active life,” Mr. Valenzuela concluded.

Democracy

If you accuse someone, make sure you have unquestionable evidence. A satirical article as evidence? Please! Go back to high school so you'd know the difference!

Memes? Go back to the primary source. If you can't, triangulate! That means looking for secondary sources and validating the information.

Proclamations by BBM? Wow. He was old enough to be aware of the atrocities committed under martial law, so how could you even believe that he has your best interests in mind?

Duterte won. Isn't that a prime example that our democracy and electoral process worked? If you're questioning Leni's lead, FYI -- that's the same process that placed Duterte there.

On the current administration, the reason you don't know what they've achieved is because you didn't even take time enough to read and string the pieces together.

Our economy is way better than before. Let me tell you why --

Suffering from the worst traffic in the word? That's because you and your friends had enough expendable money to purchase a car or two.

Cheap airfare and congested airports? That's because  you and your friends are enjoying the benefits of competition. You've got Air Asia, Cebu Pacific, PAL, etc to choose from. Oh, and in case you're wondering how smooth the travel is from the airport to your tourist destination, that's because there was a Tourism Road Convergence Program.

Expensive toll fees? Isn't that the price you pay for a 4-hour ride to Baguio because  TPLEX was linked to SLEX*? What about the other infrastructure projects under this administration?

School buildings? This administration had the most number of school buildings constructed compared to Marcos, Ramos, Estrada, and Arroyo combined.

Our credit rating has been upgraded several times. And oh, we now have money loaned to other countries.

Corruption? DPWH has generated billions in savings from procured projects -- all of which were returned to construct more roads. Btw, did you know that the road's thickness is now 8 inches from 6? No, I don't think you'd notice.

Communities can now participate in the budgeting process. You didn't know that, did you? Because you never cared to participate anyway.

I'll be the first to say that this administration is far from perfect. But you need to give credit where credit is due.

Filipino Voters Shoud Vote for My Presidential Candidate

May 9 is fast approaching and it looks like all the Presidential bets are trying to out do and out-dirt each in ways that left us bewildered and make us look deeper on who will we choose to be the next leader in our country.

I want to choose a leader that is decisive. I dont mind leaders that are divisive if divisive means drawing a clear line in the sand and defines what he or she believes in.

For example i do not believe in mending fences with corrupt people like the Marcoses. The Marcoses are not a large ethnic group of people that have found themselves on the wrong side of the law due to some cultural context and that have to be accommodated or considered for exception. The Marcoses are one political family that I believe has corrupted a system for generations of their existence. The fact that they roam freely among us and live the lifestyles that they do is a mark of shame that I carry as a Filipino.

If that is a symbol of divisiveness then ill take pride in that accusation and label.

I will vote for a candidate that holds their ground against the Marcoses   in any way shape or form.
So what are things you should consider why you should vote for my presidential bet.

1. A long history of political background under his belt.
2. Protecting and continuing the works of the previous administration in ways that he will not put the blame why situation has happened in our country.
3. He will be prepared to undertake the challenges most especially in the foreign policy of the country, specifically the China problem.
4. He will be knowledgeable enough to prevent future financial crises that we may face.
5. He will hold accountable all the government people who have plundered the countyr’s wealth and fight corruption along the way.
6. He will be a president who will put tough sanction against local terrorism.
7. He will invest on the labor sector and will revitalize the laboor forces.
8. He belives that an affordable healthcare coverage is a right of every Filipino people.
9. He has the most valid economic agenda among the presidentiables today.
10. He is more than prepared to be the next President of the Republic.

Educating Voters: The Systems Thinking WayEducating Voters: The Systems Thinking Way

Educating Voters: The Systems Thinking WayEducating Voters: The Systems Thinking Way

Discussions around the upcoming elections, both in the Philippines and in the United States, show the kind of electorate that builds our democracies where every opinion is heard – ignorant or not.
It can be argued that the quality of a democracy is heavily dependent on how educated and responsible the people are in making choices individually and collectively. Civil rights and freedoms such as the freedom of expression are guaranteed in a democracy, but the trap is when people start to believe that an ignorant opinion is equal to that of an informed, responsible choice.

In the Philippines, there is a prevalence of election memes flooding social media right now with information or misinformation due to the relative ease by which these things can be posted and shared online. Nowadays, people have become more opinionated about anything under the sun, but not necessarily well-informed individuals. People have become taste-makers and policy movers with every like and share on Facebook or with every tweet that they do on Twitter.

The things that people post online are not just indicative of people’s personal mental models, but are also manifestations of the current social structures that define public discourse.

Imagine all the things that our children are exposed to in this information age. Some people who are already considered adults are still easily swayed by propaganda and faulty logic, what more our children who may not have been trained to be critical of the info that they see and share online. The better scenario would be to have children start being critical early on in school.

This situation highlights the pressing need to educate not just voters, but also young ones, to be more critical in discerning what is really true and valid from what is merely a lie or propaganda as they go through all the posts and shares in social media. One is empowered more if we approach the election season, and any other social or personal issue for that matter, more critical and practicing the Habits of a Systems Thinker.

Luckily, there is Benedictine International School in Quezon City, Philippines that trains its students to be more critical of the information that they receive which in turn, greatly affect their decision-making. Students are trained early on to look at and discuss things critically, using the Habits of a Systems Thinker.
The following are some of the Habits of a Systems Thinker, essentially leadership qualities, that a voter must look for in an effective candidate beyond the memes and shared posts on social media:

1. Sees the big picture

Does your candidate maintain a balance between the big picture and important details? Does your candidate have a vision to begin with, or merely a reaction to the now and gets lost in the details? Once elected into public office, especially in a national post, a leader cannot afford to be myopic and detach the self or the community from the rest of the dynamics of a bigger system, which is the rest of humanity.

2. Recognizes that a system’s structure generates its behavior

Does your candidate focus on internal causes rather than dwell on external blame when in addressing challenges and social issues? Does he/she have a clear understanding of how parts affect each other and create the behavior that emerges? Does your candidate strengthen or weaken democratic institutions? It is important to note that changes, in order for them to be more sustainable, must be achieved on the level of mental models. Goo working structures must be put in place to sustain government efforts, instead of merely reacting to issues and putting blame on individuals.

3. Identifies circular nature complex cause-effect relationships

Is your candidate aware of and open to feedback, either reinforcing or balancing? Does he consider different parts and how they affect one another?
As such, the leader must recognize that cause-effect relationships within dynamic systems are circular rather than linear. He/she can identify where circular causality or feedback emerge in making complex decisions.

4. Changes perspective to increase understanding

Is your candidate tolerant of differing views? Is your candidate open to feedback? Does he/she approach the right people to help him/her gain new and wider perspectives on an issue? Does he/she puts value on collaborative work of different sectors rather than exerting the tired-way of top-down, linear approach to governing? Inclusive growth can only be realized if we start to empower people to participate in nation building. Hence, a leader looks at issues from differing angles and points of view, acknowledging that he has no monopoly over good ideas.

5. Considers issue fully and resists urge to come to a quick conclusion

Does your candidate act decisively, yet not impulsively? Is he/she able to manage the tension that exists when issues are not resolved immediately? Is your candidate inspiring enough to lead others to be patient while living in unresolved problems? A leader is not too quick to judge and will take time to understand the system’s structure and its behavior before recommending and implementing a course of action. He/She will never oversimplify things for soundbites and popularity. He does not promote patronage politics and understands that some quick fixes do not work.

6. Considers short-term, long-term, and unintended consequences

Does your candidate consider all the possible consequences? Does your candidate think of long-term solutions? Is he/she willing to own up and be responsible for unintended consequences when they emerge? A leader is willing to accept short term pain for long-term gain. A leader understands that there are trade-offs that must be considered, but these things should never be at the expense of the people, the majority, and most especially the most vulnerable in society.

7. Recognizes the impact of time delays

Is your candidate realistic and truthful in assessing how quick the solutions may come? Are there bases for the claims and promises of your candidate?  Does your leader respond with urgency, but not hastily? A leader understands the importance of time delays especially when an action is taken within a complex, dynamic system. He/she will also account for the impact these delays may have within the system.

These are just some of the things that we must demand from those who wish to have the honor and privilege to govern us. When we vote for certain individuals and elect them to office, we are essentially giving them the power to direct the course of the life of our communities towards either the good or the bad. Being critical of our candidates is one the best types of participation we can do in our democracy.
As parents and adults, we have the responsibility to choose the leaders who will help us and steer our communities in defining the future for our children. It would have been better if schools expose our children early on to a more critical way of looking at things, the Systems Thinking way. Practicing the habits of a Systems Thinker like those listed above, is a good way to become productive contributors in a working democracy that truly considers the people in its choices.

We have the power to choose between allowing our children to become pawns in a political game or to become opinion-makers that help direct public discourse towards a more sensible and responsible one. Be more involved in your child’s future by sending them to schools which can help them become critical consumers and producers of information. To know more about Systems Thinking in schools, you may reach Benedictine international School at 951.7154 / 951.7454 / 951.8960. The school is located in Capitol Hills Drive, Old Balara, Quezon City.
